The most serious question though is whether the decline in reported cheating cases reflects an actual decline in cheating. Five years ago, vigilant professors kept a lookout for cheaters. Now, under the new regime, the faculty trusts students to monitor each other. As runs the proverb, “When the cat is away, the mice they will play.” The decline in reported numbers of cheating cases might simply mean students are less strict with each other than were their professors. We need to know (confidentially, of course） what students really think about the number of cheating cases unreported. Do students—as seems likely— sometimes turn a blind eye to their errant classmates?
