The number of cheating cases reported at Groveton has fallen better than 50% over the five years since the honor code was adopted. The first question we need to answer is did Groveton ever have a cheating problem? If so, how big was it? If Groveton is a huge mega-university with U. Michigan’s 50,000 students, the drop from 31 cases to 14 represents a tiny change in what was a non-problem to begin with. If, on the other hand, Groveton is a tiny liberal arts school with only a couple of hundred students, its cheating problem remains serious. We need to know Groveton’s enrollment. We also need to know whether that enrollment has drastically declined over the years in question! If enrollment has fallen fifty percent, for instance, the cheating problem has, in fact, remained perfectly intact. Only when we know this can we assess whether Groveton was prey to the rise in collegiate cheating.
