Good afternoon! It’s my great honor to be here for this interview.
My name is H. and I was born in S., a city in H. Province. I got my bachelor’s degree of Economics at Z. Univ. in the year of 20**. During my college life, I had been working hard on my study and was granted a scholarship for excellent learning. Apart from my major study, I also attached great importance to English learning and passed the CET-6. And I participated in the China Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling and entered the final after a training-and-selecting program. In addition, I had various hobbies in my spare time, such as handwriting, literature, music, cycling, and climbing mountains.
After graduation, I have worked for a branch of X. I. Bank for almost * years, and my main duty is international business settlement. I think I have put into practice what I have learned, especially knowledge on finance and trade. And I have benefited much from my work experience.
However, with time going on,I came to realize that it’s not really a suitable job for me. The atmosphere is too noisy, too colorful, and too commercial there. As I am a calm and analytical person with a thirst for knowledge and wisdom, I think it’s better for me to pursue a career characterized by studying, analyzing and thinking. And I like to work in a relatively quiet environment so that I can concentrate on what interests me. So, economic research is an ideal career choice for me. But my current professional knowledge is still too limited and superficial to realize the goal. That’s why I am eager to further my education in this prestigious university with a high academic status.
If I could be enrolled, I will spare no effort to deepen my understanding of economics and lay a solid foundation for my professional career. If possible, I will also pursue my doctorate degree in the future. And I am strongly convinced that my perseverance will be repaid some day.
This is my brief introduction. If there are more details you want to know about me, please let me know. Thank you all!
考官问答:
University life and study
Why do you choose to study in our university?
Firstly, studying economics in your university has been my dream for many years. During the College Entrance Examination, I failed to be enrolled in your university and now I am trying my best to fulfill my dream. Secondly, as we all know, your university has a great reputation in the field of economic study, with so many excellent teachers who have strong research abilities. And finally, I’m deeply attracted by the academic atmosphere and the diligent spirit of students here.  That’s why I choose to further my study here.
Would you like to talk something about your university?
I graduated from Z. Univ., which has a history of more than 60 years. It is a famous university with economics, law, and management as its core disciplines. And Economics is one of the subjects with the longest history in our university. Looking back on the years I have spent there, I’m really thankful to my university for enriching my knowledge and broadening my horizons.
How are you benefited from your university?
I have been studying in my university for nearly four years. I enjoyed my experience there and I benefited a lot from it. Firstly, I had many good teachers who have given us much help in our learning. Secondly, there were friendly classmates and close friends with whom I could talk and share my happiness. Thirdly, the campus activities were rich and colorful, which could help enrich my knowledge and broaden my horizons. In one word, my university life paved the way to my successful future.
Could you sum up your study habits in your university in a few points?
Well, I think there are three points about my study habits. Firstly, it’s important to grasp the main contents. When reading a book, I often make full use of the table of contents, and also draw some charts to make the main ideas and relationships visualized. Secondly, proficiency is important. For example, many Chinese students have learned English language, more or less. But what matters is how proficient you are. That is also true in our pursuit of knowledge in other fields. Thirdly, diligence is my advantage. No one's born being good at all things. We become good at things through hard work. I never suppose that I am smarter than others, but I do believe in the old saying that practice makes perfect.
Tell us something about your major in the university?
I have a passion for economics because I think it’s useful and necessary.
As we know, the world economy has grown rapidly during the last decades. However, many people today are still experiencing kinds of difficulties in their lives. Many are still longing for better jobs, better food, better clothes, better housing, and better education for their children. But resources are usually scarce. It’s not easy to meet all the needs.
So it’s necessary to reflect on some important questions: How could we produce goods and services as more as possible with limited resources? How could we reduce unemployment and maintain price stability as well? And how should we distribute resources and income to achieve efficiency and fairness? We can get many insights about these questions in studying economics. That’s why I choose economics as my major.
Do you think a university education equals a successful future?
I’m afraid I don’t really think so. Definitely, a university education is one of the basic requirements to compete in the job market. Without that, we can’t even stand in the waiting line. But we should realize that the knowledge or technique we acquire on campus is often theoretical. We will never know whether it works or not until we put it into practice. Therefore, maybe it’s better to say a university education is a precondition for a successful future.
What is the most important skill you have acquired at college?
Well, I think I have benefited much from my college life. As for the most important skill, I must say it’s the way to communicate with others. In the beginning, I was not very good at that. As I made more friends and took part in more activities, I gradually got to learn how to get along with people around. First of all, it is sensible to be a good listener. That is to say, we should listen to the feelings and opinions of others. Secondly, it’s important to express myself clearly and concisely. And finally, we should be generous, honest, kind and always be ready to offer help.
Call you recall one exciting experience you have got at college?
Well, there are lots of exciting experiences during my college life. Among them, my participation in a mathematical contest in modeling is unforgettable. A friend once told me that she was planning to take part in the China Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling and she asked if I had any interest to be a partner. I answered yes immediately because I have always got much interest in mathematics. To prepare for the contest, I read several books about statistics, logic, optimization method and mathematical modeling in my holiday. After a training-and-selecting program, our team entered the final. What’s more important, I got to realize that mathematical modeling interests me very much. In other word, I have got a new hobby. That made me very excited.
Work
What’s your job? Most difficult part? Most important issue?
After graduation, I have worked for a branch of X. I. Bank for almost * years, and my main duty is international business settlement. I think I have put into practice what I have learned, especially knowledge on finance and trade. And I have benefited much from my work experience.
Suppose that an exporting company has received an order and then a letter of credit from a client in USA. After loading the goods on board, the company would get several documents, such as invoices, insurance policies, and bills of lading. These documents could be presented to me and here comes my job. I would examine the documents in search of any potential errors or discrepancies. And I would contact the exporting company to confirm whether the documents should be modified. When all the documents are ready, I would send them by courier to the issuing bank of the letter of credit and ask for payment.
It’s not a easy job. Firstly, I must learn some international Customs and Practice for trade and finance. Secondly, I had to learn lots of Chinese rules and regulations about cross-border settlements. What’s more important, I must keep careful almost every minute during working hours to avoid misoperation. In one word, it’s a demanding job and I have benefited much from my work experience.
As for the most important part in my work, I must say: to be careful. I must keep careful almost every minute during working hours to avoid misoperation. So, it’s a demanding job and I have benefited much from my work experience. And being careful will be a great advantage of mine in my future career, as well as in the study of economics.
I also worked for a small company that specializes in big data for financial industry. It’s merely a temporary job. My main duty is to search on the internet for some information of banking industry, such as the information about new financial products in the market.
Personality/character
What kind of personality do you think you have?
I think I’m a strong-minded person. Once I set a goal, I will just persist with it no matter what difficulties there may be in the way. To achieve the goal, I will stay surefooted, hardworking and enthusiastic. Of course I do fail sometimes, but I would never let myself sink into depression. Even if I fall down, I can still pick myself up and start again.
How are you getting along with your classmates or colleagues?
Well, I get along very well with my classmates and colleagues. And I think there are several key points on this. First of all, it is sensible be a good listener. That is to say, we should listen to the feelings and opinions of others. Secondly, it’s important to express myself clearly and concisely. And finally, we should be generous, honest, kind and always be ready to offer help.
What are your great strengths?
I think my greatest merit is that I’m a strong-minded person.
What are your great weaknesses?
I’m afraid sometimes I think too much in making decisions, like, have all aspects been considered? Will it be a practical solution acceptable to all parties? And how should I cope with unexpected conditions in the future? But, you know, it’s almost impossible to make everything perfect all at once. So these years I am trying to make some changes on this. When I feel difficult to go into action, I say to myself: “Life is like a box of chocolate. You never know how to do something well unless you try to do it. So, just have a try first, and then improve it step by step.”
Do you call yourself a happy person?
Sure, I am a happy person. I like to look on the bright side of life. I do experience failure and depression sometimes, but feeling bad could merely make things even worse. So I will just say to myself: losing the game at the moment dosen’t mean failure in my whole life. Even if I fall down, I can still pick myself up and start again. Thus I can always keep myself happy, bright and optimistic.
How do you feel about your achievement so far?
Generally speaking, I am satisfied with my performance so far. Firstly, I have worked hard on my schoolwork and got admitted to a great university. Secondly, my college life has enriched my knowledge and broadened my horizons. Thirdly, I have managed to obtain a position in a bank and benefited much from my work experience. And now, I am endeavoring to pursue my dream of studying economics in your university. So I’m satisfied. But I will never stop improving myself in the coming days.
Hometown:
Could you tell us something about your hometown? What’s your hometown famous for? Typical food?
Well, I was born in S., a city in the northwest of H. Province. Maybe it’s a city unknown to many friends, but there is a famous mountain in S.: W. Mountain.
W. Mountain is famous for its perfect combination of natural and cultural scenery. It is also renowned for its profound traditional Taoist culture and W. kungfu.
Besides W. Mountain, there are many beautiful mountains, hills, valleys and streams in my hometown. It’s really a nice place for sightseeing.
By the way, S. is also the hometown of a famous automobile manufacturer, D. Motor Corporation. Though its headquarters has moved to W. City years ago, there are still some auto factories left in S..
a mountainous area, plain, flat, the capital city of H. Province, more convenient transportation and facilities, more money, better human resources, more opportunities to cooperate with business associates, relocation cost is high.
D. Reservoir, starting point the middle-route of South-to-North Water Diversion Project
Favourite Season: autumn. Firstly, the weather is pleasant then, neither hot nor cold. What’s more, you will have the opportunity to see many leaves and flowers in various colors on the mountains and hills.
Well, as for typical food, I couldn’t remember any special ones from S.. But I do know some typical food in H. Province, such as Wuchang Fish, Hot-and-Dry Noodles, Dongpo Pork, and so on.
Z. City is located on the southern coast of Guangdong Province. It borders Hong Kong by sea and Macau by land, and it’s not far away from Guangzhou City. It has been established as one of China’s Special Economic Zones in 1980. While developing its economy, Z. pays great attention to environmental protection. So it is beautiful, romantic and is known as an ideal modern city for living.
I prefer to live in Beijing for it’s not only the capital of China, but also a great cultural center. There are many great universities, libraries, museums, and historic buildings here. In addition, Beijing offers more opportunities for self-development. So life is more exciting and colorful in Beijing.
Family:
Can you introduce your family to us?
Well, there are four members in my family: my parents, my elder brother and me. My father is an ordinary worker and my mom is an industrious housewife. My brother is … and I think I am very lucky to have a brother ……! But these years, I have been always too busy to spend much time with my family. I usually go home during the Spring Festival, and we usually make dumplings, buns and fish. Sometimes we take a walk along a river bank or climb a mountain in a park if the weather is pleasant.
In my family, we usually celebrate important family occasions like birthdays or festivals by having a big feast. We will prepare for it together and we can chat with each other over the meal.
Which of your family members influences you most?
I think that should be my grandpa. Though he has been died for years, I always miss him very much. My grandpa was once a teacher. He knew much about history, literature and he was good at handwriting. When I was a child, I’d like to be with him and ask him to tell me stories in the evening. That experience had a deep influence on my interests as well as my personality.
Weather:
Does weather affect you in any way?
Yes, maybe a little. I usually feel high-spirited when the weather is pleasant, especially when it’s sunny and warm. I would be very efficient then. However, rainy days often make me sleepy and depressed.
Which season do you enjoy most?
I like autumn best. It’s neither hot nor cold. The sky is clear and blue. It’s the best time for cycling, which is my hobby. I can spend plenty of time on outdoor activities and enjoy the nice view of some scenic spots. In addition, it’s the most comfortable season for work and study.
How do you like the weather in Beijing?
Well, I think the weather in Beijing has different features in the four seasons. It’s rather cold and dry in winter. And it’s hot in summer. In spring, there will be wind and sandstorms sometimes. So I think autumn is the best season here, you know, cool and comfortable.
Hobbies and interests:
Your favorite sport?
My favorite sport is cycling. I like to go cycling in spring or in autumn, when it’s neither hot nor cold. Also, the weather matters. A sunny day is the best. Usually, I will call on several friends. We can cycle along a seacoast or around a lake. We can also enjoy the nice view of some scenic spots. And we will talk and laugh without any pressure. That makes me very relaxed and happy.
Are you interested in any ball games?
Only a little. I seldom play ball games, except for ping-pong sometimes. Even though I can’t play ball games well, I’d like to watch games on TV or on the internet with my friends.
What kind of music do you like most?
I like pure instrumental music, such as Forest Spring by Bandari, and Happy Arabia by S.E.N.S. I’d like to listen to this sort of music while doing my handwriting exercises in a quiet evening. I think it’s a kind of enjoyment. Bandari is musical project in Europe which consists of several musicians.
