A new Rand Institute study suggests obese Americans spent more for their health care than smokers do. Obesity adds almost $400 a year and smoking just 230.

And the government says health care spending per person will reach more than $9,000 a year in the next decade. That’s almost double what we spent in the year 2000.

However, more and more medical students are skipping high paying jobs in surgery and choosing other specialties. The journal Archives of Surgery says applications to surgery residencies have dropped 30% in nine years. Students want shorter training and less demanding hours which they can get in areas like radiology.

And it’s definitely not the salad days for the lettuce industry. A cold weather spell stunted most lettuce growth in western states. Lettuce prices were pushing $3 a head, the highest in 25 years.
