Palestinian negotiators who are in the United States for a Middle East conference say there’s still work to be done before the agreement with the Israelis can be reached. The Palestinian negotiator Ahmad Qorei was speaking after talks with the American secretary of state Condoleezza Rice and her Israelis counterpart Tzipi Livni, ended without agreements on a joined documents in advance of the conference. Later President Bush said difficult compromises would be required to achieve peace. James C reports

After holding separate white house meetings with the Israeli and the Palestinian Leaders, President Bush attended a dinner at the United State department. There in the presence of the main players of this Annapolis meeting he spoke of the participants shared vision of two democratic states: Israel and Palestine existing side by side. Achieving this he said would require difficult compromises but the two countries had elected leaders committed to making them. In the presence of delegates of over 50 countries, he said that the two-state solution he has espoused is also one he intends to help realize.
