French president Nicolas Sarkozy has said that NATO and its allies are fighting a war against terrorism in Afghanistan which they can't afford to lose. During a short visit to Kabul he said France would help develop the Afghan army and police, and would take the decision on troop numbers in Afghanistan in the next few weeks. Nicolas Sarkozy arrived in Kabul early in the morning for a short visit of just a few hours to meet president Hamid Karzai and some of the one thousand three hundred French troops based in Afghanistan as part of NATO's international security assistance force. Most are stationed around Kabul, some involved in helping to train Afghan soldiers. But there are also troops in Kandahar supporting French Mirage jets operating at the southern base. There have been calls by the US for greater European involvement in Afghanistan, especially by sending troops to south and east where much of the fighting is concentrated and also sending more resources.
