史蒂文森为自己写的墓志铭表达了生死观：
Under the wide and starry sky

生而快乐死亦欢

尚怀一念赴九泉

后人为英王查理二世Charles II(1630-1685)写的，融诙谐与讽刺于一体的墓志铭：
Here lies a great and mighty king
此地安息非凡王
Whose promise none relies on
无人把他来指望
He never said a foolish thing
金口不曾说蠢话
No ever did a wise one
圣体何为社稷忙

还有一个有意思的，虽不是历史名人（其实是个动物），却非常经典：
给军骡的墓志铭：
Here lies Maggie, the mule who in her time kicked a general, two colonels, four majors, ten captains, twenty-four lieutenants, forty sergeants,two hundred and twenty privates, and a bomb.
军骡马吉葬在这里。在她的一生中，她踢过一个上将，两个上校，四个少校，十个上尉，二十四个士官，二百二十个士兵和一枚炸弹。
