Suicide bomber kills 32 Shia worshippers

At least 32 people are dead and many more injured after a woman blew herself up today among a group of Shia worshippers near a mosque in Karbala, Iraq.

The attack took place in a coffee shop in the southern Iraqi city, about a kilometre from the Imam Hussein shrine, one of the holiest sites for Shiites.

Karim Khazim, the city's chief health official, said the 32 killed included seven Iranians. Many foreign visitors tend to visit the site and are believed to be among the dead and wounded.

Police said the suicide bomber was female but provided no further details.

Karbala has been the scene of clashes between loyalists of Shia cleric Moqtada al-Sadr and Iraqi forces.
