Paris: Where were you a cop?
Ed: Los Angeles.
Paris: Were you fired or did you quit?
Ed: I took medical leave. It made me sick. I burned out, I guess, wasn't up for it. One day I got a call, for a jumper. A young Mexican girl, pregnant, infected with AIDS, totally strung out. She was truly one of the doomed. I asked her to come in off the ledge and into my arms. She asked me why she should bother living.
Paris: What did you say?
Ed: I was trained to tell her lots of things. Her dreams, all the people who'd miss her. But for a second, I hesitated. And she saw it. Within that second, I couldn't think of one optimistic thing to say to her. So she spread her arms and jumped. I started getting headaches, and eventually started blacking out. So I filed for medical.

埃德：我受过的训练让我当时应说很多话——她的梦想，那些将会想念她的 人。但在一秒钟内，我犹豫了，她看出了这点。那一秒钟内，我想不出一件乐观的事对她讲。于是她张开双臂跳了下去。(那之后)我开始感到头疼，最终开始短暂性眼前昏黑。于是我提出病退。

2.(Be)Strung Out：Strung的原形是String(绷紧弦、使紧张/激动)。“Strung Out”在文中是口语词组，表示一个人的身体被毒品毁了。
