Passage Five
     Under the new Part-time Job Release Scheme you could 
stop working for half your normal hours.

     In addition to receiving your pay for the hours you 
continue to work we pay you an allowance to help make up 
the difference.

     In the example Tom Smith is 63 ,and apart from the war 
years hed been working since he was 14.

　　Quite naturally he thought he deserved a break. So when 
he heard about the new scheme he approached his boss about 
it.

     The company found a younger unemployed person to 
replace Tom for half his normal working hours,and Tom was 
accepted.

     Now he works Tuesday and Wednesday one week;Tuesday, 
Wednesday and Thursday the next.

     When he worked full time his take-home pay was ~ 
89.38. Now his take-home pay is ~ 52.78 in addition to 
which he receives an allowance of ~ 23.70, making a total 
of ~ 76.48.

     To Tom and his wife it means a difference of ~ 12.90 a 
week. But they think its more than worth it for the extra 
time they can now spend together. The table shows that 
other married men of the same age could expect in similar 
circumstances, not counting the likely savings in fares and 
other costs of going to work every day. Figures for half-
time take-home pay include both wages and the allowance 
from the scheme.

    The main condition is that your employer takes on an 
unemployed person for the hours you no longer work. If you 
would prefer to give up work completely and youre in the 
same age groups there is also the full-time Job Release 
Scheme.
