Passage Five
What is happening is nothing less than the
extermination, by disease, of the most common tree in the
hedges of England. Nearly all the old elms of the
countryside will soon be dead, and a lovely and familiar
feature of the landscape will have disappeared, if not for
ever, certainly until the middle of the next centu-ry.
As the landscape becomes poorer and barer, there is
only one point of comfort. Over the next few years, new
elms will grow up from the roots left in the ground. It
will be a long time before they grow large enough to have a
significant effect on the landscape, and for at least 10
years they will be too small to pro-vide homes for the
grubs of the elm bark beetles. So, with any luck, the
disease which the beetles carry will largely die out, for
lack of habitat. As the new generation of elms grows up we
shall know a great deal more about them and their
distribution;and, perhaps, we shall value the tree and its
beautiful timber much more, now we have seen that they
cannot be taken for granted.
The ability of the common elm to reproduce from root
suckers is not unique, but is rare. A tree left alone in
ungrazed land will build a hedge around itself and this
will eventually enlarge into a wood. Hedg-erow elms expand
sideways along the hedge. While the elm produces abundant
flowers in February every year these rarely ripen into
viable seed. Even more rarely does the seed find the warm,
moist bare soil it needs to germinate. It is thought that
many individual elm clones have survived since the Stone
Age by the purely vegetative process of suckering. Such
elms frequently haunt the sites of ancient settlements.

1.Theextermination(Orextinction)Ofatree(Orelms)ishappening.
该句中“nothinglessthan(肯定的)”和“extermination(灭绝)”可能对许多人来说是生词,但因句子结构不复杂,不影响准确地缩写。
2.The elms will disappear fOr halfa century.
3.There is a reasonable possibility that the disease will disappear.
4.Because one disease in elms carried by beetles will die out.
5.It is giving the opinion Ofothers.
