PART 11 Reading Comprehension (50%)
Section A
Directions: There are 4 passages in this part. Each
passage is followed by some questions or un finished
statements. For each of them there are four choices marked
A, B, C, and D. You should decide on the best choice and
blacken the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a
pencil.
Question 21 to 25 are based on the following passage:
There is a new type of small advertisement becoming
increasing common in newspaper classified columns. It is
sometimes placed among "situations vacant" , although it
does not offer anyone a job and sometimes it appears
among "situations wanted", although it is not placed by
someone looking for a jobeither. What is does is to offer
help in applying for a job.
"Contact us before writing your application", or "Make
use of our long experience in preparing your curriculum
vitae(履历) or job history", is how it is usually
expressed. The growth and apparent success of such a
specialized service is, of course, a reflection on the
current high levels of unemployment. It is also an
indication of the growing importance of the curriculum
vitae or job history, with the suggestion that it may now
qualify as an art form in its own right.
There was a time when job seekers simply wrote letters
of application. "Just put down your name, address, age and
whether you have passed any exams", was about the average
level of advice offered to young people applying for their
first jobs when I left school. The letter was really just
for openers, it was explained, everything else could and
should be saved for the interview. And in those days of
full employment the technique worked. The letter proved
that you could write and were available for work.Your eager
face and intelligent replies did the rest.
Later, as you moved up the ladder, something slightly
more sophisticated was called for. The advice then was to
put something in the letter which would distinguish you
from the rest. It might be the aggressive approach. "Your
search is over. I am the person you are looking for." was a
widely used trick that occasionally succeeded. Or it might
be some special feature especially designed for the job in
view.
There is no doubt, however, that it is the increasing
number of applicants with university education at all
points in the process of engaging staff that has led to the
greater importance of the curricuhm vitae.
When a consumer finds that an item she or he bought
is faulty or in some other way does not live up to the
manufacturers claim for it, the first step is to present
the warranty, or any other records which might help, at the
store of purchase. In most cases, this action will produce
results. However, if it does not, there are various means
the consumer may use to gain satisfaction.
A simple and common method used by many consumers is
to complain directly to the store manager. In general,
the "higher up" the consumer takes his or her complaint,
the faster he or she can expect it to be settled. In such a
case, it is usually settled in the consumers favor,
assuming he or she has a just claim.
Consumers should complain in person whenever
possible, but if they cannot get to the place of purchase,
it is acceptable to phone or write the complaint in a
letter.
Complaining is usually most effective when it is
done politely but firmly, and especially when the consumer
can demonstrate what is wrong with the item in question. If
this cannot be done, the consumer will succeed best by
presenting specific information as to what is wrong, rather
than by making general statements. For example, "The left
speaker does not work at all and the sound coming out of
the right one is unclear" is better than "This stereo does
not work."
The store manager may advise the consumer to write to
the manufacturer. If so, the consumer should do this,
stating the complaint as politely and as firmly as
possible. But if a polite complaint does not achieve the
desired result, the consumer can go a step further. She or
he can threaten to take the seller to court or report the
seller to a private or public organization responsible for
protecting consumers rights.
